ANKARA cheap asics gel nimbus 19 , March 30 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and 18 others injured on Sunday in clashes amid the ongoing local elections in southern Turkey, private Dogan News Agency reported.

Two people died and nine others were wounded when they were fighting for the election of neighborhood units in Golbasi village of Kirikhan town of southern Hatay province, according to the report.

Six others were killed and five wounded in a gunfight between candidates for neighborhood units and their relatives in southern Hilvan town of southern Sanliurfa province.

The report also said that an 18-year-old substance-addicted man injured four members of the ruling Justice and Development Party ( AKP) in a knife attack in southern Gaziantep province of Turkey on Sunday, as voting for local elections continue in the country.

The Higher Election Board (YSK) has announced that a total of 52,695,831 people are eligible for voting at a total of 177,044 polling stations in 81 provinces throughout Turkey. Security measures have been tightened against possible incidents.

The voting started at 7 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) in eastern provinces of Turkey and will end at 4 p.m. (1400 GMT). In the western part of the country voting is between 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and 5 p.m. (1500 GMT).

Twenty-six parties, including the ruling AKP, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party, are competing in the local elections.

The voters will cast their ballots for mayors, administrators of district and provincial municipalities, and provincial city council members.

In the two main provinces of Ankara and Istanbul, the race is running between incumbent AKP mayors and challengers from the main opposition CHP.

The AKP, still popular despite a shake-up, is expected to embrace the local polls as the first party, local daily Sabah reported.

The AKP received 39.1 percent of votes in the 2009 local elections and 49.9 percent in national elections in 2011.

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Brazil great Zico has sought backing from the country's football federation (CBF) in his bid to become president of world football governing body FIFA.

The 62-year-old expressed his wish to run for the position in June, just days after Sepp Blatter announced his decision to resign.

An election to decide Blatter's successor is due to be held on Feb. 26.

"The first option is this: I am Brazilian, I gave my services to the Brazilian team for 10 years," Zico told Globoesporte on Tuesday.

"I sent a letter to the president (of the CBF)... laying out the reasons for my candidacy and now I'm just waiting for his reply to see whether he makes the commitment or not, if he accepts or not. But I won't wait long because time is passing rapidly and we have other options."

Zico, who was capped 89 times for Brazil and scored 66 goals, is currently the manager of Indian Super League outfit FC Goa.

OSAKA, Japan, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- China beat Vietnam 2-0 through Gu Yasha and Zhang Rui in an Asian qualifier for the women's Olympic soccer tournament in Rio De Janeiro here on Monday.

In the 57th minute, Gu Yasha scored the opener to break the deadlock for the Chinese team, and Zhang Rui converted from the spot five minutes later to secure the victory for China.

"Our opening game was not so good," said Bini at the post-game briefing, "But what's important is that we won and got three points. We are not very strong when we face weak teams, and that's one of our features. In the next few days, we will face very strong teams, and we will be better."

Education Minister Ahmed Al-Issa issued a decree on Tuesday, under which classes will be gradually introduced in the 2017-2018 school year.

Lina K. Almaeena, a member of the Consultative Assembly of Saudi Arabia, said the move resulted from the Vision 2030 and National Transformation Program 2020 initiatives.

"I'm very happy with the issue of the decree and this is a historic day for all Saudi girls in the Kingdom," she was cited by the daily Arab News as saying.

Saudi Arabia has long had one of the world's most restrictive environments for women, requiring women to have male guardians and obey a modest dress code. They are barred from driving and largely from participating in sports.
