""With tears in my eyes I'd like to give thanks to God, my family and for all the support I have received in 24 years as a player,"" Rivaldo said.

NEW DELHI, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A huge protest rally led by Marathas, a politically powerful group in India's financial capital Mumbai, Wednesday hit the city, demanding quotas (reservation) for Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions, amendments to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe Acts as well as farm loan waivers.
The protesters wearing saffron color caps and carrying same color flags marched on the roads in south Mumbai from Byculla to Azad Maidan, forcing authorities to deploy extra security, shut down schools and issue traffic advisories.
While organizers put the number of participating protesters over 2 million, Indian media reports estimated the number of people at the rally between 600,000 and about 1 million.
According to NDTV, around 900,000 people marched on roads in support of the demands and assembled at Azad Maidan, Mumbai's large public park.
Local authorities said they did not expect such a huge crowd to assemble.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Wednesday said his government supports affirmative action policies for the dominant caste.
"We are going to constitute a cabinet sub-committee for regular interaction with Maratha representatives," Fadnavis told the state's lawmaking body.
The Wednesday's show of strength marked the end of a series of protests staged by Maratha community to press its demands.
"Today's show marks the culmination of a year-long protest by Maratha community, under the Maratha Kranti Morcha (Maratha Revolutionary Front)," organizers said. "We carried out protest marches in 57 different places across the state in the past one year."
The Maratha community constitutes a third of Maharashtra's population and majority of them are dependent on farming for making their ends meet.
Increasing unemployment and decrease in farm incomes are forcing Indian farmers to raise demands of reservations and loan waivers.
"We are demanding government come forward to help us," Atul Maitre, a protester said. "Mere rhetoric from top politicians in government didn't do anything. Now they have to take concrete steps to save us and our families."
Agriculture has suffered a huge set back in recent years in India due to unfavorable weather conditions (drought and flooding).
With Indian farming in crisis, people associated with it are forced to look for other means of livelihood.
In India, quotas for lower castes and economically weaker sections are guaranteed constitutionally.

BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech giant Baidu posted soaring profit growth in the second quarter of this year thanks to its continuous investment in artificial intelligence (AI).
Net income attributable to Baidu in Q2 reached 4.415 billion yuan (about 651 million U.S. dollars), jumping 82.9 percent year on year, according to the company's unaudited financial statement released Friday.
Total revenues stood at 20.874 billion yuan, a 14.3-percent increase from Q2 2016, with mobile revenue as the main contributor.
Online marketing revenues in Q2 reached 17.883 billion yuan, up 5.6 percent year on year.
Baidu announced its new mission in Q2 to "make a complex world simpler through technology."
To achieve the mission, Baidu will strengthen its mobile foundation in AI and use AI as a fundamental driver to elevate its current core business, specifically core products of Mobile Baidu, search and feed, according to Robin Li, Baidu's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Meanwhile, Baidu will continue to build out its newer AI-enabled initiatives through an open platform and ecosystem approach to capture long-term economic opportunity, Li added.
Baidu announced earlier this month it will roll out two major open AI platforms, DuerOS and Apollo, to speed up development in technology and applications for man-machine dialogue and autonomous driving.
The company expects to generate total revenues ranging from 23.130 billion yuan to 23.750 billion yuan for the third quarter of 2017, representing an annual increase of 26.7 percent to 30.1 percent.
