Neem is scientifically known as Azadirachta indica Leonard Williams Hoodie , and it is tree in the mahogany family Meliaceae. It belongs to the genus Azadirachta and is native to India and the Indian subcontinent like Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The tree grows in tropical and semi-tropical regions and it is also seen growing in islands located in the southern part of Iran. The oil is extracted from the fruit and seeds of neem. The tree has been growing in the Indian countryside in abundance and many of the villagers depended only on neem as medicine for various diseases. As per Indian belief even the wind which passes through the branches of the neem tree is healthy and the people lived under the shade of the neem tree and drank infusion of the various parts of the neem tree like leaf, bark etc as per the Ayurvedic tradition.

The young twigs of the tree were used for oral hygiene and the tender leaves were used in salads and cooked leaves with vegetable as food. Chewing gums made of neem were used as lozenges for dryness of the throat and alleviate thirst.
